Apple River - While searching for old bottles at an abandoned dump site in Apple River, Harris Nuttall and Susan Dean discovered the skeletal remains of a whale jaw bone.
Nuttall said he and Susan were looking through the old dump behind his house in Apple River when they came upon the bones that they first believed to be nothing but deteriorating pieces of wood.
When I tossed it aside I saw it from an angle that it appeared it may be a tusk, Nuttall said, explaining that he has a piece of tusk at his home and thought the bone looked similar.
While dropping Susan off at her home, the two discussed their find with Susans husband, Scott, who encouraged them to go back and retrieve their find and give Eldon George a call.
George is a lifetime fossil collector and owner of the Parrsboro Rock and Mineral Shop in Parrsboro.
George told the pair that what they had discovered was the skeletal bottom jaw bone of a fin back whale.
Ive come across many whale beachings along the shore over the years and Im sure the bone is that of a fin back whale, George said.
Nuttall and Dean would like to see the remains of the whale bone restored and on display at one of the local museums.

Sixty years ago there were sectional rermains of a whales' backbone in the Hander field not far from Harris Nuttals home on Field's Hill, Apple River.
It was thought that they were the remains of a beached whale which the late Harris Field rendered for it's oil.
The Hander Field is now part of the Gordon property on Field's Hill.
