SPRINGHILL: Work to improve streets and sidewalks in Springhill continues to move forward, some for the long term while the rest is just temporary solutions for the short-term, says Public Engineer Brian Herteis.
Working in tandem with the Pain Recycling Company, the Town of Springhill is updating its Main Street sidewalk between Junction Road. and Wosely Street as the recycling outfit installs underground infrastructure for its new expansion, which is currently under construction. Money for the project is through a cost sharing agreement and a little pro-bono from the contracting firm which handled the McGee Street work which took longer than expected and inconvenienced many Springhill residents, Herteis says.
"The work is being funded through a provincial and federal cost sharing agreement for infrastructure renewal and by goodwill from the contracting firm who did the water line work on McGee Street as compensation to the town for the delays and inconvenience experienced with that work."
And to be clear and dispel rumours circulating the community, the Paint Recycling Company and the Town of Springhill, while working together, are financially responsible for their respective projects. The Paint Recycling Company is not funding the sidewalk upgrades, Hereis says.
"Work on the recycle facilty property is being funded entirely by them, although the Town is working with them to coordinate the work and sidewalk design."
When completed the new sidewalk and curb will control surface runoff and direct it into a storm water collection catch basin on Junction Rd.

The sidewalk on Drummond St. is an absolute disgrace. Some idiot decided to pave over the concrete sidewalk years ago rather than do a proper repair. Now the pavement has disintegrated, making most of the so-called sidewalk unsafe to walk on. Too bad that someone wouldn't sue the crap out of the town for this unsafe mess. The town should repair this unsafe eyesore right away as its first priority, as there is nothing worse than this mess anywhere in the town.
