Cumberland County - Knowing your limits

AMHERST Atlantic Lottery is not welcome at Highland Market, at least for the next few days.

Store owner Rod Wood is firing back at the lottery corporation for suspending him for five days by refusing to sell its products in his store.

"They called me to say they were bringing my machine back. I told them to keep it because I am suspending them for seven days," Wood said. "It comes down to this, these guys think they're your boss. I'm selling their products for them and they're coming down on me."

Watching the skies

TIDNISH - If you have a pair of binoculars, there are a lot of things you can see in the night sky.

And if you have a passion or interest in finding those objects, Roger LeBlanc may have just the thing for you.

The local astronomy enthusiast is moving ahead with his plan to start a club featuring the hobby.

Its a very interesting hobby and not that expensive to get into, he said. Any time the sky is clear, theres always something to observe.

Landfill holding open house

LITTLE FORKS - Residents in the county wondering what happens to their garbage, recyclables or compost can wonder no more.

Cumberland Joint Services will hold an open house of the Cumberland Central Landfill on Friday as part of Environment Week. Visitors can take a bus tour of the recycling, composting and leachate treatment facilities, as well as see a modern landfill.

They can also enjoy a free barbecue and giveaways.

Gradual warm-up expected

AMHERST - Seasonal temperatures will take some time to arrive this summer, as a gradual summer warm-up is expected.

The Weather Network meteorologist Diar Hassan says fluctuating temperatures will be the main weather story across the country.

The already weak La Nina phenomenon is expected to continue to lose strength and, combined with jet stream blocking patterns across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, will keep temperatures variable for the season, said Hassan.

Im glad the owner of highland market is standing up for what he belives in. Id back him up too! I dont mind who does enjoy gambling their money one way or another, how ever. If hes being given a black mark for not asking a kid for id for a lottery ticket... dont you think they should stop them as well as cigerettes anyways? They try to make it out that lottery is okay, well its just as bad as smoking if you asked me...
anyways. Id still shop at this store it serves the community very well.
    thanks and job well done!
