FALMOUTH, N.S. — Windsor District RCMP, firefighters and paramedics were kept busy Dec. 19 responding to several bad accidents.
They were called out to the scene of a single vehicle crash on Highway 101 in Falmouth around 10 p.m. on Dec. 19, 2017.
The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, a 58-year-old woman from Timberlea, died at the scene.
Highway 101 was shut down between exits 7 and 8 for several hours as the investigation continued, re-opening at approximately 5 a.m. on Dec. 20.
RCMP are saying the vehicle struck a deer, which was the cause of the accident.
Hantsport and Windsor Fire Departments as well as the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal assisted the RCMP with the road closure.
RCMP said in a press release that the investigation is in its early stages.
Accident on Highway 14 claims life of Queens County man, injures West Hants woman
Another fatality occurred earlier in the evening on Highway 14 in Lunenburg County. Hants County firefighters were called to provide mutual aid as it was near Vaughans and the road needed to be blocked to traffic.
The head-on collision occurred at 5 p.m. on Highway 14, near Sherwood Road. The lone driver of one of the vehicles, a 69-year-old man from Queens County, died at the scene.
The driver of the other vehicle, a West Hants woman, sustained non-life threatening injuries.
Cpl. Jennifer Clarke with the RCMP said an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash.
A portion of Highway 14 was closed until the early morning hours of Dec. 20, 2017.
West Hants firefighters busy
Andy McDade, the chief of the Brooklyn Fire Department, said they responded to six alarms between Dec. 19 and the early morning of Dec. 20.
“We had a structure fire, a few motor vehicle accident, a medical call and a chimney fire,” McDade said.
The structure fire was located on Payzant Bog Road in Falmouth. There was also a single-vehicle collision in South Rawdon. The patient was treated by EHS.
McDade said the chimney fire in Ardoise was knocked down quickly.
The freezing conditions overnight may have been a contributing factor to some of the incidents, McDade said.
“It always heightens the awareness for members when responding to calls like that, because of the slippery conditions,” said McDade.
“This time of year is really bad with flash freezing, it creates quite a few problems,” he added. “It can turn into a very hazardous situation very quickly.”
McDade said they’ve had a busy month in general, responding to more than 30 alarms in December so far — averaging 1.5 a day.
