More than a decade ago the retailer used to have a small operation in the community next door to its competition, the Bargain Shop. Time proved the market was too small for two retailers but Kevin Kane, owner of the great Canadian Dollar Store, said Springhill always had a place in his plans for the future.
“When we left I had said if the Bargain Shop didn’t renew its lease we could come back in a minute,” Kane said. “We knew it was a prime location but there’s no room for two retailers in the community.”
Unlike other dollar stores where the wares run usually five dollars or less, the Great Canadian Dollar Store offerings run between $1 and $10, but up to $20 for such things as sheet sets, so many of the things the community felt they lost with the closure of the Bargain Shop will be returning. Kane hopes to see that happen soon. A closing date for the purchase of the building is projected for mid-May, followed by renovations.
“Our goal is [to open] towards the end of June, but it could be the end of July,” Kane said.
Kane said a manager has already been hired and 10 jobs are expected to be created when the retailer is ready to open its doors.
The Great Canadian Dollar Store, www.dollarstore.com, is a franchise with locations coast to coast and as far north as Whitehorse. Founded in 1993, the company came under Kane ownership in 2015. Headquartered in Victoria, BC, Kane’s office is in Quispamsis, N.B.
