The Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre in Springhill has played host to the annual recognition since opening its doors in 2004 and every year the crowd has grown a little bit bigger. At one time it was possible for the friends and family of the recipients from so many great groups and organizations to come along and celebrate their acknowledgement, but ever year the number of recipients has grown.

This year marks the first year the centre has to limit the number of guests to just the recipient-plus-one: there’s that many volunteers being recognized April 26.

“We’re really limiting spacing for capacity,” Leisure Service’s Michelle Herrett said. “Because of the merger with Springhill, Parrsboro and the county there are so many organizations.”

This year groups and organizations are being asked to nominate one representative to attend the recognition night and that recipient is allowed to bring a guest. Deadline for submissions are Fri, Mar. 31st, and the April 26th event is expected to well attended, especially with the addition of Parrsboro to the county’s roster.

“Cumberland County is such a large place now,” Heather Laurie, also with Leisure Services, said.

A spin-off of the larger numbers is more communities are becoming familiar with their neighbours and the many groups and organizations that make those communities vibrant.

“We couldn’t run without volunteers,” Herrett said.

Forms for submissions are available through the community centre and can me mailed, faxed or dropped off in person no later than 4:30 p.m. March 31st. For more information, contact the community centre at 902-763-3000.
