UPPER NAPPAN – The opening of the Sunset Community Thrift Store and Laundry Service came closer to reality at Wednesday night’s meeting of County Council.
“We are here today to ask the council and the municipality to support and approve our request to add an operating line of credit to our account to operate the store in Oxford,” said Randy Thompson, manager at Sunset Industries, which is based in Pugwash.
Thompson says a $40,000 line of credit would be sufficient to help with operating costs.
“For our project in Oxford, as we begin to put in place our accounting and banking processes, it has been recommended that we have a bank account with an operating line of credit,” said Thompson. “This is standard operating process for most businesses to allow cash flow and to ensure we are able to operate through slow periods.”
Located on the corner of Main and Water Streets, the Sunset Community Thrift Store and Laundry Service will operate as a retail shop selling used clothing and thrift store merchandise, and also provide laundromat and laundry service, as well as a lunch counter and coffee shop.
“Oxford does not have a laundromat or a thrift store, and there is no lunch counter or coffee shop in the downtown. We believe we will be a great addition to the town’s retail sector,” said Thompson.
The store will be staffed by two employees from the community and between five and ten client workers, people with intellectual and physical challenges who will work to work alongside the two staff.
Council agreed to direct Municipal staff to review the Sunset Thrift Shop and Laundry business plan and, if appropriate, prepare a borrowing resolution for a $40,000 operating line of credit with the bank.
