AMHERST – On Friday April 27, police in Amherst were out reminding motorists to buckle up and put their cell phones away while driving.

Members with Amherst Police Department, RCMP Northwest Traffic Services in Amherst and Amherst RCMP Detachment conducted checkpoints on Albion Street and Victoria Street to promote seatbelt use and to reinforce the dangers of using mobile devices behind the wheel.

The checkpoint resulted in 16 summary offence tickets for various offences under the Motor Vehicle Act.

To help keep our roads safer for everyone, police are reminding motorists that it's against the law to use a mobile device when operating a motor vehicle and all drivers and passengers must be properly secured in a seat belt or child restraint.
