Slated for Apr. 6, from 6 to 8:30, the evening is the brainchild of Business Administration student Taylor Ripley and with the support of her college she is laying the groundwork for what’s expected to be an excellent showcase of local business women and their accomplishments. The plan, Ripley says, is to have lots of activity in a short period of time
“I’ll have vendors around the cafeteria and workshops in different rooms, with [women] speaking on behalf of their story and how they got to where they are now,” Ripley said. “There will be a network session after that, so it will create a resource for the women in our community to share.”
The event is open to the public and any women in business, any age, can attend. Confirmed vendors include Donna Gogan from Flutterbye Jamaican and Caribbean Cuisine, Stephanie Allen with Gateway Development, Lisa Martin Cole of Jeremiah Tree Glass and many more. Keynote will be by Damaris Spa & Wellness Centre, Manasseh Local Food and Simply for Life owner Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin.
The scope of the Women In Business event will lend itself to work Ripley will be doing later in April in Peru, she says.
“From this event I hope to be able to see the challenges women face here in our communities and be able to compare and contrast with the women in Peru and see how different or how common they are and to bring back what I learn there to implement it here in my community,” Amherst Regional High School graduate said. “I feel like no matter what geographical location women are in we are all connected in some aspect and when women are empowered by each other they can become more successful and they are able to make better decisions for themselves and for us in society.”
The event, campus Principal Don McCormack said, is an exciting new chapter for the college connecting with its community.
“We’re really hopeful this is the beginning of something that will carry on and be sustainable and the college and Cumberland Campus are really excited to be part of it, “McCormack said.
The Amherst NSCC Cumberland Campus is located at 47 South Albion St. For more information on the event, or to pre-register, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
