SPRINGHILL – RCMP officers had an increased presence in and around Springhill Junior-Senior High School early Thursday amid concerns more threats had been made against the school.

“I can confirm that there was no threat made,” Const. Dal Hutchinson said. “Someone started a rumour on snap chat that there was a threat which had a ripple effect. We can confirm that those who started the rumour will be spoken to by police and it will be noted how such rumours impact so many people.”

Last week, both Springhill Junior-Senior High and River Hebert District School were placed in a hold and secure after an Amherst teen allegedly made threats against the Springhill high school.

The Cumberland Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit, assisted by members of the Amherst Police Department, arrested an 18-year-old and the hold and secure was lifted at both schools.

Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education spokesperson Jennifer Rogers said the school is working closely with RCMP, but it was business as usual there on Thursday.

“There is no lockdown or hold and secure in place at Springhill this morning. Everyone is safe and it’s business as usual,” Rogers said.

Parents were on social media late Wednesday and early Thursday expressing concerns about the safety of the school amid rumours that something would happen there Thursday. Several parents considered keeping their children home on Thursday.

Rogers assured parents the school is safe.
