Springhill’s active living coordinator Rachel Little says the town just received a provincial grant that will let the leisure services department introduce a GPS program fro the community.

Leisure Service’s Active Living Coordinator Rachel Little comes to the community after acquiring degrees in outdoor recreation and elementary education. Part of the after-school program at the Cumberland YMCA in Amherst for the past year and-a-half and working with the Tim Hortons Childrens’ Foundation, Little began her role with the community in March. As the days get warmer, many of the programming the town has grown to expect will return as well as some new ideas she’s working on.

“I’m working with the community maintain the existing programs, but also looking at new ideas like a learn to run program for adults or high school students; 3 on 3 basketball tournaments and 4 o4 tournaments for youth,” Little said. “I’m also helping with the 125th anniversary [of Springhill’s incorporation] activities and programs.”

Leisure Services has also just recently received a grant from the provincial government that will be used to develop a geocaching program and GPSs will soon be available for loan through the community centre.

“We’re thinking about a larger geocaching course of historic locations in the community,” Little said. “We’re looking to try new stuff.”

Tidbits soccer will also return to the community in June and in July the junior golf program will tee-off.

A community clean up in anticipation of the community’s 125th celebration will take place in partnership with the Anne Murray Centre on June 12, between 2 and 4 p.m., with a free barbecue to follow for the participants.
