AMHERST – The Mining Association of Nova Scotia and MLA Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin delivered prize checks to students Monday as part of the Mining Association of Nova Scotia’s Mining ROCKS! Video Contest.

“Students from across the province created incredibly clever and interesting videos about mining and quarrying in this year’s contest,” said Sean Kirby, executive director of the Mining Association of Nova Scotia. “We congratulate all the students for their excellent work and thank them for participating in the contest.”

Siblings Fumairia Laureijs and Christelinda Laureijs tied for second place in the contest’s Best 30-second Commercial category so they each won $166.

The category ended up with a three-way tie this year, with Nicole Dion from Madeline Symonds Middle School being the third.

Fumairia is in Grade 9 and Christelinda is in Grade 11 and both are homeschooled.

“Mining provides materials essential to our daily lives,” said Smith-McCrossin, the MLA for Cumberland North. “For example, the salt mine in Pugwash provides the salt that helps keep Nova Scotia’s roads and highways safe in winter."

Fumairia’s video, entitled, “Are YOU Minedful?,” is available at: https://notyourgrandfathersmining.ca/contest/laureijs

Christelinda’s video, entitled “Hurray for Mining!”, is available at: https://notyourgrandfathersmining.ca/contest/laureijs2

The Mining ROCKS! Video Contest, which is open to all junior high and high school students in Nova Scotia, encourages kids to produce short videos about mining and quarrying.

This year’s judging panel included Natural Resources Minister Margaret Miller, Membertou Chief Terry Paul, Colchester Mayor Christine Blair, Truro Mayor Bill Mills and several accomplished film and media professionals.

The panel of judges picks the winners for the Best Junior High School Video, Best High School Video, Best Comedy and Best 30-Second Commercial. The fifth category, the People’s Choice winner, is decided by the public through an online vote and almost 1,500 votes were cast this year.

The winner in each category is awarded $1,000, with a total of $500 going to the runner-ups. There is a total of $8,000 in prize money this year.
