The 74-year-old Truro resident was elected the MP for Cumberland-Colchester in 1993, defeating then Progressive Conservative incumbent Bill Casey in the Liberal sweep that saw the Jean Chretien-led Liberals reduce the Progressive Conservatives to two seats nationally.
Brushett served on a variety of parliamentary committees during her four years in Ottawa before being defeated by Casey in the 1997 federal election. She would attempt on two other occasions to reclaim the seat from Casey in 2000 and 2003, but was unsuccessful each time.
Born in Bath, N.B. she married Sam Brushett in 1966 and raised two children while building Dominion Biologicals Ltd. – a leading Maritime biotechnology company.
She fought lymphoma in 1991 and was diagnosed with leukemia just 14 months ago.
