AMHERST – The cause of a fire on Willow Street in Amherst that left a home completely destroyed is under investigation.

Firefighters from the Amherst Fire Department were called to the scene Thursday at 11:38 a.m.

“When the call came in they said the home was fully engulfed,” said Greg Jones, chief of the Amherst Fire Department.

There may have been an explosion at the home.

"The caller indicated they heard a possible bang at the time they called in,” added Jones. “We did find pieces of glass and wood and whatnot on the edge of the road.”

Nobody was hurt at the scene.

“There are no injuries for our folks, or anybody who had been in the residence, and no injuries for anybody in the nearby neighborhood.”

Asked if natural gas caused the explosion, Jones said, “We really have no idea exactly what it is. There is natural gas in the area but there is no natural gas at this property. Until we get in and start pulling things apart we won’t really know.”

Police are currently on the scene to keep the scene secure.

“Myself and the Fire Marshall’s Office are going to come back tomorrow and go over the scene,” said Jones.

Firefighters cleared the scene at about 2:30 p.m.
