Amherst took time to recognize the nation’s flag during National Flag Day of Canada ceremonies at Victoria Square on Wednesday.
“The Canadian flag is the symbol of the nation’s unity, for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens of Canada without distinction of race, language, belief or opinions,” Amherst’s deputy mayor Sheila Christie said.
Christie said this year’s celebration has added meaning in that it also coincides with Canada’s 150th birthday. Amherst, she said, figured prominently in Canada’s founding as a nation in that four Fathers of Confederation called the community home.
The town is hosting a number of events to celebrate the 150th birthday of Canada, including during this weekend’s Winter Carnival celebration that has the theme 150 Year of Heart, Culture and Play.
Christie also honoured the YMCA’s most recent Peace Medal winners, including Ken MacKenzie, who was also Amherst’s volunteer of the year in 2016, and the Amherst Rotary Club’s Refugee Project, represented at the ceremony by committee member Paul Calder.
