AMHERST – Amherst’s CARMA chapter is ceasing its operations for the unforeseeable future.
In a note posted to the group’s Facebook page, Michelle Hicks said the organization is out of money and unable to continue its trap-rescue-neuter or rescue program.
“It will be all we can do to care for those cats and kittens in care at present,” Hicks’ note said. “We will be following through with spays/neuters on our list - recent rescues, mamas and fosters or recent adoptions - however, all other activities have been suspended.”
Hicks said the group’s recent fundraiser was not as successful as hoped and only raised enough money to cover this month’s veterinary bills.
“This is the first time since forming this chapter that we have had to close our doors to helping, and this is truly heartbreaking to have to make this decision,” she said.
Hicks said CARMA will continue to be open for adoptions and will continue to fundraise through the winter with events such as the online that provides funds to look after the fosters currently in care.
The group will also be planning other fundraising events it hopes will put it in a position to resume TNR operations in the spring.
In the meantime, if there are cats that have been abandoned, people can call the SPCA in Halifax at 902-835-4798 or if there have cats that need to be taken into care, people can call the local animal shelter at 902-661-7297 or contact the Moncton Shelter.
“Thank you to everyone who has been so supportive of what we do, and hope that you will continue to support our fundraising over the winter to help us be able to resume operations in the spring,” she said.
