AMHERST – Cumberland and Westmorland’s beef industry as in the spotlight Saturday during the 31st Border Classic Beef Show and Sale.
Activities began earlier Saturday with the beef show at the Maritime Beef Test Station in Nappan with 18 steer, including two from local 4-H participants, being auctioned off at the Amherst Curling Club that evening.
The grand champion steer, owned by Earl Cail, was purchased by Wayne ‘Butch’ MaKenzie Auto Sale for $4.75 a pound, while the reserve champion, owned by Nicnat Farm, was sold for $4.25 a pound to Trider’s, Tantramar Electric and McCain Fertilizers.
The 4-H grand champion, owned by Nick Mitchell, was sold to Sobeys for $4.75 per pound with the reserve champion, owned by Dusty Breeze Farm – Beverly Booth, was purchased by Atlantic Stockyards, Murphy’s Excavating and Septic, Lacey Fisher ReMax and Central Electric.
Harrison’s Home Hardware purchased a steer, owned by Clarence Estabrooks, for $5.25 a pound and a steer, owned by Alan and Shelley Fillmore, for $2.80 a pound, while Spring Meadow Farms from Newfoundland bought a steer, owned by Andy Carter and Susan Collins, for $4.50 a pound and a steer, owned by Thunderbrook Farm (Trueman Family), for $6.25 a pound.
CR Dickson Trucking and Forest Liaison bought a steer, owned by David and Linda Locke and Family, for $3.85 per pound; Tantramar Electric and Oliver Earle Contracting bought a steer, owned by Weldon Estabrooks and Family, for $7.30 a pound; Cowtown Country and Boudreau Meats bought a steer, owned by Davanna Holdings, for $4.50 a pound; Amherst Country Store paid $4.10 a pound for a steer owned by Jan and Doug Trenholm and Casey Concrete bought a steer for $5.25 a pound from McInnis Cattle Company.
Amherst Superstore paid $3.60 a pound for a steer from Ryan Phinney and Spencer Acton; RA Farms and Corey Allen’s Plumbing and Heating paid $3 a pound from James Scott, Darrin Carter Logging, Ronnie Gogan, George Hollis Trucking and Jeff Black Trucking paid $3.65 a pound for a steer owned by Ben Bacon and Cumberland Realty paid $3.35 a pound for a steer owned by Harold and Cindy Oulton.
Amherst Nissan paid $4.10 a pound for a steer owned by S&S Dixon Farm, Fort Equipment paid $3.40 a pound for a steer owned by Tantramar Acres Farm (Nathan Murray) and Jones Family Funeral Home, Co-Operators Insurance and Creighton, Shatford and Hibour paid $2.90 a pound for a steer owned by Brandon Smith.
The event, that also featured a dance to close out the evening, featured a hip of beef buffet from Duncan’s Pub and saw one of the largest crowds in attendance at more than 450 people.
