There were 9,413 people living in Amherst in 2016, compared to 9,717 in 2011. It’s also lower than the 2006 census, when there were 9,505 living in the town.
Provincially, the population of Nova Scotia increased by .2 per cent to 923,598.
Cumberland County’s population, which in the census included the former town of Springhill, dropped by 4.3 per cent to 30,005 from 31,353, while Parrsboro – which was still a town at the time of the census – saw its population decline by 7.7 per cent to 1,205 from 1,305 in 2011.
Oxford, on the other hand, saw its population increase by 3.4 per cent to 1,190 from 1,151.
Just across the border, Sackville, N.B. saw its population drop by 4.1 per cent to 5,331.
