The bills are of poor quality. They are printed on paper stock instead of polymer, and the notes have Chinese characters in the location of the windowed pane on the note.
While the notes are of poor quality and easier to identify as counterfeit a cashier who is distracted might accept these bills.
Amherst Police say they have received five complaints this summer where bills have been found on the ground in the downtown core. At this point, police are unaware of any attempts to pass the bills in our area. There have been reports of these same bills in other provinces.
Police would like to remind merchants to take the time and inspect any currency to ensure it is authentic before accepting it.
Anyone with information about the counterfeit money is asked to contact police at 902-667-8600 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
