AMHERST – The Amherst 50-plus Club can’t get a break, unless its their own windows.
The Croft Street clubhouse just replaced the majority of its windows a few short months ago after vandals shot them out with a BB gun, but over the weekend the yet-to-be apprehended culprit returned and shot out the replacements.
“As far as we can tell it was Saturday night,” Merrill Murray said. “I was here for our 45s tournament on Friday, and the girls came in Sunday and noticed it. We just spent $1,300 three months ago to replace them.”
The new windows were special ordered with reinforced metal mesh, Merrill said, and good thing too. The BBs didn’t penetrate the glass, which could have sent shards into the building, but the damage is obvious and will need to be replaced, along with vinyl siding that was also shot and an outdoor light.
The clubhouse, which caters to the community’s seniors, grandparents and the elderly is increasing frustrated with what Murray described as juvenile delinquency and abuse towards the community seniors.
“The people who are doing this, how would they feel if when we find out who they are and did it to them? Because that’s what they are doing to their grandmothers and grandfathers. That’s who is here.”
Police have been notified of the damage to the front and side of the building, but Murray says the destruction of the seniors facility has been an ongoing issue for years. Now that a gun is being involved, he fears for public safety, especially the suspect behind the damage.
“What are the parents doing that they don’t know if their kid is out with a BB gun? Especially at night. At night, if you have a gun the police are going to draw real guns. It’s a dangerous thing.”
