PARRSBORO – Children learn more when they are having fun, according to those putting on the annual Old Home Week bicycle rodeo.

This year’s event, moved inside the Lions Arena due to rainy weather, was hosted by the Parrsboro Lions Club but put on through a partnership between the Cumberland RCMP, Cumberland YMCA and A&W restaurant.

Considering the weather, the organizers seemed pleased with the turnout.

“It’s good information for parents and kids, and we make it fun,” said Const. Darren Dawson of the RCMP. “If you make some type of task fun, the kids are going to remember it.”

Children at this year’s rodeo were learning such skills as driving a figure-8, looking over their shoulder, looking both ways, and avoiding dangerous situations when on a bicycle.

The event began with an instructional session led by Const. Travise Dow, and then proceeded with children bicycling through an obstacle course, with volunteers working at various stations.

“We have four stations, with each teaching them something different,” said Dawson. “But mostly it is about being aware of your surroundings.”

The YMCA and A&W were more than happy to come on board as partners this year, he explained, and that partnership will continue during two more bicycle rodeos planned for Cumberland County this summer – one in Pugwash on July 26, and another in Oxford on Aug. 6.

“It’s all about bike safety and getting the kids out to have a good time,” said Laura Coleman, manager of fitness and aquatics at the YMCA. “It brings awareness about physical activity, as well as the importance that they are being safe while out and about on their bikes.”
