The Pride Flag will fly at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre and other health facilities beginning Thursday.
AMHERST – As the community celebrates diversity and pride by raising the Rainbow Flag in downtown Amherst on Thursday, the Cumberland Health Authority’s Cultural Diversity/Social Inclusion Committee will also be flying the Rainbow Flag at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.
This represents another initiative of the committee that has been working to support culturally competent, inclusive health care for all residents of Cumberland County. Committee chair, Dawn Ripley, says the committee is comprised of CHA staff members as well as representatives of community organizations and the community health boards.
“Our objectives include increasing awareness and learning about diversity and cultural competence among staff, physicians, volunteers, and local organizations, as well as creating culturally welcoming environments that respect the diversity in our communities,” said Ripley.
Other projects undertaken by the committee include the maintenance of diversity display cases at CHA facilities across the district. The cases were generously supported by the community health boards and display a range of information throughout the year.
During July and August, the cases at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, All Saints Springhill Hospital and North Cumberland (Pugwash) Primary Health Care Clinic are highlighting diversity and the LGBTQ… community.
Students of the Springhill Junior/Senior High School Gay Straight Alliance and the Amherst High School Gay Straight Alliance assisted with the display materials in their local communities.
The CHA Cultural Diversity and Social Inclusion committee also recently held a 2-day Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Safe Spaces Training which was attended by staff and various community partners.
The objective of the training was to enhance cultural competency and to promote, champion and maintain a safe workplace/client environment around sexual orientation and gender identity.
This is the first step towards engaging staff in other departments/units/agencies in order to ensure safe spaces are available across the district.
