A man has been charged with sexual assault following an incident on Lawrence Street on Saturday in which a female victim was approached from behind and picked up.

AMHERST – A 40-year-old man has been charged with sexual assault following an incident on Lawrence Street on Saturday.

The female victim was walking in the area when a man approached her from behind and picked her up. The victim was able to escape her attacker after elbowing him and yelling for help.

The man was quickly identified by police and arrested a short distance from the scene.

He has been remanded into custody and sent for a psychiatric assessment. He is due back in court on July 22 for election and plea.

Also on Saturday, a 37-year-old man was arrested for public intoxication after he was observed walking in an inebriated state on Victoria Street.

He was issued a summary offence ticket for being intoxicated in a public place.

Amherst Police responded to 86 complaints between June 16 and 22.

On Sunday, police responded to a complaint that four young people were throwing rocks at vehicles from the train overpass on West Pleasant Street.

The youths, ages 11 to 13, were located and given a verbal warning by police. No charges were laid.

A 17-year-old youth was charged with assault and damage to property after an incident at a Spring Street residence.

The youth had gotten into a physical altercation with a family member during the incident and a door was damaged.

He will appear in youth court on Aug. 6.


Police received reports of tires slashed on a vehicle parked at a residence on Havelock Street. There was also a vehicle damaged in a similar matter on Matthew Terrace. 

Police are currently investigating both incidents. 

Officers received a call to assist family members in gaining entry into a Prince Arthur Street residence to check on an elderly female resident inside. 

The door was forced open by police and a female was located on the floor. 

The 77-year-old woman was responsive and was transported to the hospital by Emergency Health Services.


Police received a report that a vehicle had backed into another vehicle and then drove off without stopping in a parking lot of an Albion Street business. 

A licence plate was obtained by witnesses and the vehicle was stopped by police. 

A 20-year-old female has been charged with failing to remain at an accident and backing up unsafely. 

Officers were called to an Albion Street residence to assist in keeping the peace in a landlord/tenant dispute. 

Police arrested a 40-year-old man for breach of the peace after he started to act aggressively towards officers. The tenant, who was given a notice to vacate by the landlord, vacated the property with no further issues. 

The male who was arrested was released from custody with no charges.


Two bicycles were reported stolen from an East Victoria Street property. One bicycle was described as a youth’s bike coloured green and black. The second bicycle was described as a lime green Norco 360 3-speed.

A skateboard was also reported stolen from a Havelock Street property.

No details were provided about the board except that it had two white wheels, a yellow wheel and a black wheel. 

Police are investigating both incidents.


Officers attended a Smith Street residence after allegations were made that an adult had assaulted a child. 

This matter was resolved without charges, however a male involved in the incident was arrested on unrelated outstanding warrants and held in custody.  

He was to appear on June 23 on those matters.

Amherst Police responded to a report of a possible intoxicated female walking on foot on South Albion Street. 

Patrols were made of the area, however the female was not located.


Police received reports of graffiti on the back of the Town Square Mall. 

Police are continuing their investigation.

A theft of money was reported from a downtown area bar. 

The female suspect had taken money from a cash register after the bar tender was distracted. 

A suspect has been identified through surveillance video of the incident.  The matter is still under investigation and no charges have been laid at this time.
