AMHERST – The Most Improved Sea Cadet Corps trophy was presented to the 258 Amherst Sea Cadets, which recently held their Annual Ceremonial Review at the Amherst Armouries.

“The 258 Amherst Sea Cadet Corps has doubled in size in the last year-and-a-half,” said Terry Mudge, reviewing officer at the 2014 ceremony. “They had 25 new cadets this year.”

There is 20 sea cadet corps in Mainland Nova Scotia.

“Most of the smaller communities in Nova Scotia have dwindling populations among the young,” said Mudge. “To have that many young people joining is great to see because I can guarantee it’s not happening in many parts of the province.”

Mudge said there were three reasons why the 258 Amherst Sea Cadets received the most improved award.

“They had an increase in Cadets, an increase in staff, and the introduction of the Naval League, which is another body to help with fundraising to support the corps.”

Helen Triff is the commanding officer for the 258 Amherst Sea Cadets, and Mudge gives her much of the credit for the massive growth in participation.

“It was only two years ago Helen was working by herself (one staff member), so there’s been a dramatic change.”

Mudge also give credit to the parents of the cadets.

“Youth are often playing video games and watching TV, so it’s nice to see them coming out,” said Mudge. “A lot of that is because of the support from the parents. Hopefully they will come back and support the corps again next year.”

He says the community also deserves a pat on the back.

“As much as DND (Department of National Defence) and Navy League of Canada supports these programs it’s all about the community,” said Mudge. “I sit in Halifax and I can’t make the sea cadets grow from Halifax. We provide guidance but it’s all about taking that guidance and making it work in the community.”
