AMHERST – Amherst is getting some help from the province in building a sidewalk to the new West Highlands Elementary School.

The town and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal have come to an agreement that will see the town build a new sidewalk on Cornwall Avenue to the new school with the province reimbursing the town up to $50,000.

Under the agreement, negotiated by the town and the province, Amherst will be responsible for design, construction and contract administration of the sidewalk on behalf of the project.

Deputy CAO Jason MacDonald said the town is required to build the sidewalk to the new elementary school that’s expected to open sometime in late 2014.

The work is expected to be complete by Oct. 31.

MacDonald said the town’s engineer has confirmed the project can be completed for $50,000.
