AMHERST – Firefighters were called to the scene of a fire on Pearl Place in Amherst Thursday at about 7:45 p.m.

The lone occupant of the house, a 75-year-old woman, was at the store and when she came home she found her home was on fire.

"I grew up in that house, so it's really sad to see what has happened," said the daughter of the 75-year-old who, along with several other people, was comforting her mother in front of the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and is not considered suspicious. Amherst Fire Chief Greg Jones hopes the cause will be determined early Friday.

The home is located directly behind Lawton's Drugs, across the railroad tracks.
