People are flocking to the Market at Dayle's two months after it opened in Dayle's Department Store.
AMHERST – Last summer when hundreds of people flocked to downtown Amherst’s artisans markets Matt Cormier and Stephanie Moreau started thinking about offering the market on a year-round basis.
In March, Moreau moved over from the Flo Lifestyle Boutique and joined forces with Cormier to open the Market at Dayle’s.
“It has been a huge success, it’s exceeded our expectations,” Moreau said. “We’ve seen a lot of traffic and a lot of demand for vendor space.”
Moreau and Cormier led the artisans markets last summer that saw musicians team up with Amherst and area artisans and downtown businesses to showcase their talents and products throughout the season.
In moving the market indoors, it allowed Dayle’s to rejuvenate a section of the store and bring back that coffee counter of past generations and offer musical entertainment on Saturdays as well as vendor space along the centre aisle of the store’s main floor.
“It’s been good for us in that it attracts more people to the store on Saturdays, but we’re seeing more people coming in on other days as well,” Cormier said. “It’s also positive in that it gives the vendors a place to show off their products at a time of year when there aren’t many locations locally for them to go.”
The Saturday markets run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Cormier said plans are already underway for additional artisans markets this summer with the first one expected June 21.
Cormier said the store also wants to host barbecues as part of the market and is offering up its barbecue to any community groups wishing to use it as a fundraiser. Groups have to supply their own food, but Dayle’s will supply the barbecue.
Anyone wishing to being a vendor can inquire at Dayle’s, go to the store’s Facebook page or email firstname.lastname@example.org .
