Mayor cuts ribbon to open new home for established downtown businesses

New life has been breathed into the former Cinders Restaurant building.

AMHERST The world of buying local has taken a giant leap forward with the opening of Manasseh Local Foods in downtown Amherst on Victoria Street.

The former home of Cinders Steakhouse, the building has been renovated inside and out to become home to a medley of businesses, each complimenting one another and customers’ shopping experience.

Lifestyle and weight loss professionals Simply For Life set the stage for creating a new, healthier you, Manasseh Foods provides local, healthy ingredients, and the Art of Deli work their magic turning some of those ingredients into mouth-watering dishes.

“Manasseh came out of a need I saw through Simply For Life and as a nurse,” East Coast Holistic owner Elizabeth Smith McCrossin says. “People want to eat healthy and eat local.”

Creating a showcase for local agriculture, the shelves of Manasseh are stocked with familiar names and places: beef from Leicester’s Dickie’s Meats; pork and lamb from Holdanca Farm in Wallace; fresh baked bread from Connie’s in Malagash and Breakfast at Brittany’s here in Amherst. Dry goods, local honey, fresh fruit and much more are available.

Adding to the atmosphere is the now relocated Art of Deli, who will use some of the local ingredients on their menu and, soon, Simply For Life-ready meals.

It’s a wonderful and unique opportunity, Smith-McCrossin said, and broadens the opportunity to have Simply For Life-ready meals available.

“The big picture is creating sustainable food opportunities for a community,” Smith-McCrossin says.
