Fire contained at Amherst apartment building

Published on April 15, 2014

AMHERST – Unlike the Victoria Arms fire of 2012, a Dickie Street apartment in Amherst is still standing but 28 people are awaiting word if its safe to return home.

Amherst firefighters, police and the Canadian Red Cross were on the scene Monday night as 28 adults and children were evacuated from the building, more than the number of residents displaced by the 2012 fire at Victoria Arms which was completely destroyed by fire.

Amherst Fire Chief Greg Jones says last night's blaze was mostly contained to an apartment on the second level and the unit above it, but there was water damage in adjacent areas and smoke throughout the building, in which at least 16 apartments were occupied.

Jones says nobody was hurt and nobody was taken to hospital.
