MACCAN - Chris Cameron may have left Maccan many years ago, but Maccan never really left him.
It was the history of the Cumberland County village that always interested Cameron, who now lives in Edmonton, and he has responded by writing Maccan: A Glimpse Into the Past, which he hopes to soon have available to readers.
“I always wanted to write the history of Maccan,” said Cameron, who grew up in Maccan and left in 1967, but considers it his birthplace.
“There was little on the village and what is available is either cursory or scratches only the surface.”
A more immediate reason for the project is what he refers to as a “growing loss of community memory.”
“Now seems like a good time,” he said. “This history can add to the overall history of the area.”
The 180-page book contains never-before-seen photos of Maccan, including its shipbuilding and coal mining industries, as well as other businesses, the churches in the area, and 17 pages of photos and text on the Maccan Power Plant.
