AMHERST – Tuesday, June 19 will mark a huge change for the Amherst Fire Fighters Association.

After many years of Friday night bingo, the association has decided to move it to Tuesday nights.

The week day bingos are always the most successful, but back when the association first started doing bingo, Friday was the only night available.

“It is our hope that a move to Tuesday nights that we will continue to receive great support from the community,” association member Kurt Fawthrop said. “There will be some new prizes along the way, including a special, and timely prize of a new barbecue.”

The Amherst Fire Fighters' Association has held bingo games since 1974 to raise funds to support the local community. The priority in distributing funds is primarily the support of children and children's activities, or charities that help children.

Recipients of bingo funds include: the Amherst Sea Cadet Squadron, Cumberland Minor Hockey Atom Ramblers, Nova Scotia Burn Treatment Society, Nova Scotia Firefighters' Museum, Amherst Little League, Amherst Minor Basketball, Kidney Foundation, Autism Nova Scotia, Highland Fling, United Way of Cumberland, Christmas for Kids, Striders Running Club and the Amherst Food Assistance Network.

The association has a special relationship with Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada, for which we have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars since 1964.

Special events, such as the annual ladder sit, are held to raise funds for MDAC so the funds raised by bingo can be spread more widely throughout the community.

In order to prepare for the first Tuesday night switch, there will be no Bingo held on Friday, June 15.
