The February meeting of Holy Family CWL was held on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
President Francine Robichauld called the meeting to order. Deacon Howard Gotell led us in the League Prayer followed by the singing of O Canada.
The minutes were read by secretary, Dianne Gillis and the treasurer’s report was presented by Maria Kirkpatrick.
Corresponding secretary Debbie Frenette, read the correspondence.
Thank you notes were received from the Knights of Columbus, Brenna Ward, Sean and Glenna O’Quinn and the Lamirande family.
Also read were letters from the hospital auxiliary, our adopted family in India, our Diocesan President, and from Marilyn Hawkes regarding World Day of Prayer.
This year World Day of Prayer will be at Christ Church on March 2 at 2 p.m. Members are encouraged to attend.
Spiritual Development: Pauline Pettigrew read, in Diane Yarymowich’s absence, that our council celebrated its 11th anniversary in January.
A mass card and condolences were sent to Juanita Boyle on the passing of her husband, John. Our members attended and participated in an Ecumenical Service for the Week of Christian Unity hosted at Holy Family Parish in January. We were reminded that Lent begins next week and we are invited by God to come to Him in a deeply personal way.
Sub-Committee Stamps: Dorritt Amos reported that she has been organizing and compiling the stamps passed into the church for the past eight years and has been sending them to the Scarborough Mission.
As the Scarborough Mission is no longer involved with the project, we will look into other organizations that are accepting stamps. Madame President thanked Dorritt for her time and commitment.
Christian Family Life: Mary Lynne Chapman reported that there were four funeral receptions since the first of January. She thanked all those involved in working the receptions and providing food. She reported that the Food and Workers Lists are being revamped.
The new mugs have been purchased as well as three new storage trays. We are awaiting two more trays that have been back-ordered. Also, a box of maps and plans of the old church had been found and donated to the Cumberland County Museum.
Health and Education: Pauline Kellegrew reported that reminder letters were sent out to the IODE, Lions Club and Trinity St. Stephens for the Amherst Pre-School Snacks. The recipients of the CWL Burseries were Gillian Moore, Mackenzie O’Quinn and Brenna Ward. She thanked the bursary committee for their help.
A letter was sent to the Knights of Columbus for their continued support in supplying cakes for Reconciliation, Confirmation and the First Eucharist receptions. Marguerite Burns tickets are available and must be returned by March 31.
Two communiques have been received from National - one promoting Mental Health Through the Mid Life Years and the other promoting Mental Health Through the Lifespan: Children and Teens.
Community Life: Debbie Frenette read Pat Frenette’s report. She reported that sympathy cards were sent to Linda Ward and to Juanita Boyle. Get Well cards were sent out to Pat Wetmore, Alda Robichauld and Pat Frenette.
A pointsettia and card were delivered to Laura McArdle for her 100th birthday. Pat sent two dozen baby hats to the hospital.
Communication: Pat Weatherbee reported that a write-up of our Christmas Turkey dinner was printed in the Dec. 8 edition of the Amherst News and posted on our Facebook page.
Fifty-nine letters from our CWL members were sent to our Member of Parliament, Bill Casey, regarding the Catholic Women’s League’s Pornography Hurts Campaign.
Notifications of our Pancake Supper on Shrove Tuesday were sent to CKDH, CFTA, Eastlink Community TV as well as the Amherst News. Posters were distributed around town and at the senior’s complexes.
Christmas Tea and Sale: Francine reported a very successful Tea & Sale where 103 tickets were sold. She thanked all those involved as well as the Girl Guides for their valued help.
Christmas Dinner: Pat Weatherbee reported on our annual Christmas Dinner held on December 3rd and catered to by Janey Allen and Staff. At the dinner, we welcomed new members Pam Chappell, Sara Chappell and Jillian Ross. We were entertained with music by the M&M Youth Choir and the members of the Executive. We donated to the Christmas for Kids and to our local Food Bank.
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper: Francine reported that all is in place for our Pancake Supper on Tuesday. Thanks to all those involved!
Business Arising from the minutes
Computerized Annual Reports: Reports were all finished by Dec. 31. Francine thanked the executive for their promptness.
March Meeting: We will have our Rice Meal at the next meeting on Wednesday, March 14 at 5:30pm with a collection for Development and Peace.
Way of the Cross: We have been asked to lead “The Way of the Cross” on Friday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. Francine asked us to please take part and attend, if possible.
Francine offered a special thanks to Maria Kirkpatrick, Pauline Pettigrew and Pat Weatherbee for setting up for the meeting and Dessert Buffet.
Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Palm Cormier.
The winners of the 50/50 were Palm Cormier and Josie Stevens.
