Holy Family CWL meets March 21

CWL News and Notes

The March meeting of Holy Family CWL was held on Wednesday, March 21. President Francine Robichaud called the meeting to order after our annual Rice Meal for Development and Peace.

Francine thanked all for their help and for their donations to Development & Peace. Deacon Howard Gotell led us in the League Prayer followed by the singing of O Canada. Francine welcomed everyone especially Kay Pugsley as she prepares to move to Ontario.

Dianne Gillis read the minutes of our February meeting.

Pauline Pettigrew presented the treasurer’s report in Maria’s absence.

Debbie Frenette read the correspondence. We received letters from: our MP Bill Casey, the Highland Fling, Vacation Bible Camp, the Call To Convention, the CWL Annual Diocesan Meeting, the World Union of Catholic Women Organization, and the Kidney Foundation. We also received an invitation and a thank you from the International Woman’s Day committee and thank you notes from Pat Frenette and Autumn House. A motion was made by Linda Ward and seconded by Tania Long to honor our usual March donations.

Monthly Reports

Spiritual Development: Diane Yarymowich reported that we had an excellent turn out when we led ‘Way of the Cross’ in February. Our council was well represented at the World Day of Prayer on March 2 at Christ Anglican Church. Members Francine Robichauld, Diane Yarymovich and Pauline Kelligrew participated in the program. The feast of St. Patrick and St. Joseph occurred in March. Diane reminded members that the cornerstone to Lent is prayer.

Sub-Committee Stamp Burse: Dorritt Amos reported that we will now send our stamps to Oxfam in Ottawa. Edith O’Brien has offered to take over Dorritt’s role in collecting, preparing and sending the stamps to Oxfam. Thank you to Dorritt for her past eight years of dedication and to Edith for taking over this worthwhile project.

Health and Education: Pauline Kellegrew reported that a reminder letter were sent out to The Lord Amherst IODE to provide nutritious snacks for The Amherst PreSchool for the month of April. The Knights of Columbus have confirmed that they will provide cakes for the upcoming receptions. Volunteer sheets were passed around for workers and food donations for the RCIA reception on April 15 after the 11:15 mass. She also reported that all the Marguerite Burns Bursary tickets have been sold. We have received tickets to sell from the CWL Diocesan Annual Convention. These need to be returned by April 5.

Community Life: Pat Frenette reported that a birthday card was sent to Bernadette Brown, on the occasion of her 98th birthday and a ‘Get Well’ card was sent to Josie Stevens. Pat knitted and delivered four dozen baby hats to the hospital. She will deliver a cake to Victorian Manor for those residents celebrating birthdays in March as well as deliver Easter cards to all Nursing Homes in the local area.

Communication: Pat Weatherbee reported that write-ups of our February general meeting and annual meeting were printed in the Amherst News as well as on our CWL Facebook page. Pat made reference to the winter issue of The Catholic League Magazine and the article, “Building Relationships and Partnerships with Canada’s Indigenous People” and encouraged us to read it.

SPECIAL REPORTS

Pancake Supper: Francine reported on a very successful Pancake Supper. The buffet-style set up worked very well and is something she hopes we continue next year. She thanked all those who helped set up, worked and donated food for the supper. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the parish to help with winter fuel expenses.

Business Arising from the Minutes:

Regular and Annual Meetings: Francine thanked all those involved in preparing for these meetings.

New Business

CWL Diocesan General Meeting: We hosted the Diocesan General Meeting here at Holy Family on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from noon to 3:30 pm.

Call To Convention: A motion was made by Tania Long and seconded by Andrea Rhindress to send the President and 2 delegates to the Diocesan Convention. Arrangements are being made.

Isabel Jackson’s 90th Birthday: A reception was held at Holy Family Parish on Sunday, March 24th from 2-4 pm on the occasion of Isabel’s 90th Birthday. Happy Birthday Isabel!

Feast of our Lady of Good Counsel: This will be held on April 26th  with more information to come.

Tea & Sale 2018: Our Christmas Tea and Sale will be on November 17th. We have a doll donation from Jolene Legere and a wreath donation from Juanita Boyle. Thank you ladies!

Next Meeting: Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m.

Deacon Howard Gotell’s Report: Howard read from the gospel of Luke and reflected on how all humans are created in God’s image regardless of stature or social status. He reminded us of our celebrations for Holy Week.

Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Dorilla Dunlop.

The winners of the 50/50 draw were Betty Anne Pettigrew and Rachelle Dow.
