Sunrise Shores lot owners host Labour Day party

Well school has started and things are starting to get back to normal – whatever normal is?

Sunrise Shores Lot Owners Association had a terrific party on the Saturday of Labour Day weekend. Ten cottages were represented with two having three generations present. What a great time the young people had-scavenger hunt, bag and egg races. Prizes were handed out much to the delight of the young people. Terrific barbeque with all the trimmings.
Looking forward to another party next summer. Russ and I were thrilled to have our grandson, Kristopher Bowman and his wife Tarah, of Moncton, granddaughter, Brittany Dorey and her husband, Nigel, of Mount Uniacke, spend the long weekend with us.
Jannie and Peter Berkelaar have returned from their summer sailing trip. This year they toured Newfoundland and visited so many places from Port Aux Basques to Cape St George, Corner Brook, Wood's Island and Gros Morne, where they climbed 16K and did lots of biking and visiting with residents and other sailors.
Their daughter, Julie, son-in-law Fred and three grandkids, of Ottawa, joined them for a couple of days and they all hiked together. No wonder Jannie can run the Bluenose Half Marathon. Jannie and Peter sure enjoy their sailing trips. About seven to eight years ago they sailed to Holland, stored their yacht, flew over the next summer and sailed her back to Malagash.
What a couple!
We, in Malagash, love our summer residents and this week are saying farewell to one very active and popular couple, Liza and Dick Curtis, are leaving to return to their home in California.
We wish them Bon Voyage and look forward to seeing them return next summer. Liza and Dick are active members of our church when they are here, participating in all of our events, such as serving at our suppers.
Lea and Wayne Stordahl sold their summer house and are returning to British Columbia but hope to return occasionally to our area. They, too, will be missed in our congregation and we wish them well.
There was a large gathering of MacNeill's this past Saturday as they celebrated several important occasions. Heather and Jason Lawless were celebrating their 25th anniversary, son George, his 13th birthday, Rob and Michelle of Kamloops, B.C., were married in July and it was also Michelle's birthday so party time. The 25th anniversary of Rev. Connie McNamara and Arthur Doucette was also recognized with one of the three cakes! Relatives were there from all over to enjoy the bonfire on the beach but could have done with fewer mosquitos! Congratulations to them all.
On Friday evening, the officers and members of Cedar Atlantic Chapter, Wallace, welcomed their District Deputy Grand Matron, Bev Wentzell, as she paid her official visit to the chapter. Sister Bev is from the Halifax area and was accompanied by Bev Coulier, Marlene Clyke and Susan Wroe. Great to have these visiting sisters with us.
Bev spoke on Camp Brigadoon and the Cancer Care Unit of the IWK for children who can't go to camp and the camp comes to them. It’s truly a wonderful project.
A new publication is now out and it is the Hidden Gems of the Northumberland Shore. In 2009 an American tourism consultant did a study of our coast and he suggested that our Hidden Gems be published and this summer it has happened.
It is a must reading for locals and tourists alike. I was thrilled to have been asked to write about Malagash and have read with delight the articles and information found in this book. I picked up my copy at the Malagash Museum and would encourage everyone from Amherst to Pictou to read it.
Now school has started once again and the buses are on the road. Please, please respect the "red lights" and do not pass when they are stopped. There are some stats found in Monday's Chronicle Herald that are scary--the lives of our children are in danger! Have a good week everyone, stay safe and let's be thankful that Hurricane Irma appears not to be heading our way.
