Condolences are sent out to the family and friends of four local area natives who passed away recently: Barronsfield native Sandra Alice LaPierre, 66 of Amherst; River Hebert native Brian Joseph Smith, 56, also of Amherst; Maccan’s Joseph Bray, 69, of Maccan, the husband of retired River Hebert District Elementary school teacher Lillian Bray, and Lower Cove native Agnes “Aggie” Mary Eagles of Amherst who passed away on January 22 at the QE II in Halifax. She was 72.
Cumberland Peewee Archway Insurance Peewee Ramblers captain Breanna Cormier scored three goals and four assists for seven points in her team’s 7-0 win over the Cumberland Peewee Scotiabank Ramblers on Jan. 18 at Amherst Stadium.
Local youth John-Simon Beaton also plays peewee hockey for Archway Insurance.
In addition, Cormier played basketball with the RHDH junior high Raiders at EB Chandler junior high school during the EB Chandler Cheetahs grade 8 girls Winter Classic Invitational. The Raiders, who went 1-2 over the course of the tournament, made the playoffs. On Thursday, Jan. 16, they edged the Parrsboro Warriors 28-26.
The EBC grade 8 girls were nipped 40-38 by the Pugwash Panthers in the finals.
In mini basketball action, the RHDH Mini Raiders were one of four “B” mini basketball teams who travelled to Port Elgin recently to compete in a tournament. One game saw the Moncton Mini Selects defeat the RHDH Minis 55-51. Mathieu Dube was the MVP for Moncton while Declan Leblanc was the MVP for RHDH.
RHDH finished the tournament in third place, posting a respectable 2 and 2 record.
Other teams included host Port Elgin and Sackville. The RHDH Mini Raiders, a team coached by Jessica White, is comprised of Lucas Vance, Brandon Hicks, Bayden Taylor, Cameron Vance, Dylan St. Peter, Landen White, Braxton McAloney, Declan LeBlanc and hockey players Kyle Hurley and Damon Burbine.
In senior boys action, Zach Creese of Joggins netted 21 points and added 7 rebounds in a losing cause to the Oxford Golden Bears on Jan. 20. On Jan. 18, Oxford lost 56-54 in overtime to Truro in the finals of a tournament in Oxford.
