This past week the ‘A’ team has been busy putting up summer hanging baskets to help beautify our town!

As a first for Amherst, we have installed a self-watering hanging basket on the corner of Lawrence and Victoria Street that will directly uptake water as needed through the roots from the six litre water reservoir at the bottom of the basket. These hanging planters are not only environmentally friendly; they are also made in Canada and reduce our carbon footprint by the decreased emissions of a watering truck.
Our plan is to replace all Amherst hanging baskets with hanging planters next season.
This upcoming Wednesday, June 21, community members and travelers from all over will be joining the Town of Amherst and Indigenous Northern Affairs Canada for National Aboriginal Day celebrations.
The opening ceremonies start at 11 a.m. in front of Four Fathers Library followed by a parade through the streets of Amherst then a Pow wow and celebrations in Victoria Square from noon to 4 p.m.
Eastern Canada’s top Aboriginal dancers, drummers and singers will be joining indigenous vendors and the general public, which promises to be one of the region’s largest National Aboriginal Day festivities.
Everything is free and open to all ages, visit amherst.ca for more information.
We’re also excited to release the finalized summer 2017 events bulletin this week, filled with family-first, free events and activities with something for everyone. If it’s a town swim at the YMCA, TGIM activities, trail walks or Movie Nights in the Square, there is always a reason to get out and active this summer.
Remember all organized events are planned with Amherst’s goal of being the most active, healthy community in Nova Scotia – Go Amherst Go!
A couple of other great community events to look forward to are the Amherst Artisan Gallery, Market and Café’s fourth birthday party, Eighth Annual Cross Border Dickey Park Children’s Fun Run and Saturday, the Christ Church Father’s Day Service in Victoria Square Sunday and various community fundraisers raising money for great local causes.
Make sure to buy local and check amherst.ca for the most up-to-date and full listing of events in and around the area.
