River Hebert and Area News

Condolences are sent to the family and friends of River Hebert native Florence Mary Smith who passed away recently at the age of 99, a few weeks shy of 100.

Along with daughters Margaret Bentley, Beth Baker and granddaughter Heather Hoeg, Irene Richards, whose four brothers served in the Canadian Armed Forces during World War II, attended the National Remembrance Day service in Ottawa.

In related news, I just wanted to say that is was a pleasure to interview both McLellan and Richards recently for two special Remembrance Day stories that were published in last Friday’s Amherst News. Thanks also to Elizabeth McLellan.

New Horizons card party results for Monday, November 4: Ladies’ first place: Irene Hebert; second: Jean Murphy; Men’s first place: Lawson Vance; second:  Ray Fagan. Consolation prize: Bill McAloney; Door Prize: Frances Melanson.

Pam Harrison informs me that up until Tuesday, November 19, the River Hebert Co-op is collecting size 8-14 snowsuits, jackets, boots hats and mittens for boys and girls as part of Coats for Cumberland. On Wednesday, November 20, anyone in need of warm clothing is invited to the River Hebert United Church Hall from 9:00 am until1:00 pm to make their selections. Hot apple cider and cookies will be served. Coats for Cumberland contacts are Amanda Gower and Pam Harrison.

Wednesday, November 20th, 2013 will mark the 70th anniversary of the River Hebert Co-op, a small, rural enterprise that continues to thrive. In the next year or so, such store improvements as a coffee bar, baking and deli goods will be realized.

Happy belated 25th wedding anniversary wishes to James and Darlene Maxwell of River Hebert with love from Darlene’s parents Garnet and Kathryn McEachern.
