Retailer Giant Tiger announced Wednesday that it will be opening a 20,000 square foot store in the Amherst Centre Mall.
AMHERST – Giant Tiger is coming to Amherst.
The retailer announced late Thursday that it will be occupy a 20,000 square foot location that was formerly occupied by Zellers in the south end of the Amherst Centre Mall.
“We are thrilled to be expanding into Amherst,” company president and CEO Greg Farrell said in a news release. “The residents of Amherst have been asking for a Giant Tiger store for some time. We are excited to be be part of this vibrant community and for Amherst to get to know the Giant Tiger experience.”
The store is schedule to open June 7, 2014.
It’s unknown how many jobs the new store will create.
Giant Tiger offers a large assortment of casual clothing and footwear, offering the identical quality and fashion items offered by major chain stores at the lowest possible price.
The store also provides grocery, confectionary items, pet food, cleaning supplies, housewares, stationary, toys and health and beauty products.
The first Giant Tiger store opened in Ottawa in 1961.
Zellers closed in June 2012 after its Canadian assets were purchased by U.S.-based Target. Target decided against locating a store in Amherst.
