If you haven't noticed, Volkswagen is steadily revising the styling of its entire lineup. The first production car to show the new look was the 2010 Golf, and now the upcoming 2012 Tiguan gets a corporate makeover.

The Tiguan gets the brand's new horizontal grille treatment updated with twin chrome strips spanning the new angular headlamp clusters, replete with LED daytime running lights and AFS (advanced headlight system) in the top-line SEL's bi-Xenon enhanced lenses. New trapezoidal cutouts house the fog lamps and a new centre vent gives the little CUV a sportier look.

The new 2012 Tiguan's rear end design includes taillights re configured in a "double L" pattern. The top-level SEL features a standard sport-tuned suspension plus new 19-inch "Savannah" alloy wheels, designed by VW's performance division, R GmbH.

The interior, already one of the nicest in the compact crossover class, gets updated with new upholstery across the range, the European SE featuring V-Tex leatherette, plus a number of standard features. For instance, all trim levels get heated side-view mirrors, and the new standard audio system features eight speakers plus integrated auxiliary input and Bluetooth. Volkswagen's touch-screen Premium VIII infotainment system will be available in the European market, as will two touch-screen navigation systems, the RNS 315 and RNS 510 system with rearview camera. Volkswagen will offer a 300-watt Dynaudio sound system, too.

VW's fun-loving turbocharged 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder engine appears carryover at first glance, but somehow the automaker has managed to squeeze a great deal more fuel out of it while on the highway, now the U.S. EPA equivalent of 8.1 L/100km compared to 9.4 for the current 2011 model.
