Volkswagen's Jetta gets a lot of respect. Some even go so far to say that the only thing separating it from the premium class is its badge. Therefore most don't complain when asked to pay significantly more for it than any other entry-level brand's C-segment model – the outgoing 2010 Jetta starts at $22,175.

With the new Jetta, VW is making one thing very clear. Its old way of doing business is over. At a shockingly low entry price of $15,875, the 2011 Jetta will clearly deliver value when it arrives this fall.

"The new 2011 Volkswagen Jetta with its highly competitive price starting at $15,875 becomes the entry model to the Volkswagen Brand in Canada," said John White, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada Inc. "It is completely redesigned inside and out, and offers best-in-class cargo space and rear legroom. And, it offers the only Clean Diesel Sedan available in the compact segment in Canada."

Volkswagen offers four engines with the new Jetta, from the entry-level 115 horsepower four-cylinder to the top-line turbocharged 2.0T making 200 horsepower. The fuel economy leader, however, is the 140 horsepower TDI Clean Diesel. The turbo-diesel powerplant features the latest common rail direct injection resulting in estimated fuel consumption of 4.6 l/100 km on the highway, which will place it amongst the most fuel-efficient vehicles available.
The Jetta TDI is the best-selling diesel-powered car in Canada, and the US. And the Jetta overall is one of the best selling vehicles in the world, with more than 9.6 million sold since it came onto the market 1979. Even within Canada, VW has sold more than 400,000 since it went on sale 30 years ago.

The new Jetta, introduced to the world last month in New York City's Times Square, is entirely new. It was developed at VW's Wolfsburg, Germany facility and is being built at the automaker's Puebla, Mexico assembly plant.

The styling shows the Volkswagen brand's new face, a horizontal grille front and centre and clean, classic lines from front to back. A little Audi is incorporated into the taillight treatment, but not so much that it interferes with the premium brand.

The 2011 Jetta is longer than its predecessor too, by 7.4 cm (2.91 in). Its total length is 4.63 meters (182.2 inches), while its 1.45 m (57.2 in) tall and 1.78 m (70.0 in) wide. Along with the increased length is a wheelbase that's up 7.3 cm (2.9 in), allowing for a lot more legroom in the back; up some 6.7 cm (2.6 in) to a total of 96.7 cm (38.1 in).
Five 2011 Jetta models will be available in Canada, starting with the Trendline, which is followed by the Trendline+, Comfortline, Sportline, and Highline. All models will feature Electronic Stability Control (ESC) standard, so don't think the new lower price has effected safety. The outgoing model was chosen as a "Top Safety Pick" in crash testing by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and no doubt VW has made sure its newest Jetta will achieve the same standing. This will partly be due to a revised safety chassis designed specifically for the North American market; a design that incorporates advanced pedestrian safety features as well.
