Langley, Wood lead Cobequid to intermediate boys and girls track titles

Cougars have big weekend

TRURO - You don't have to look far to see how the Cobequid Cougars were able to claim three banners at the weekend's Nova Scotia School Athletic federation Northumberland Region Track and Field Championships at the TAAC Grounds.
Nick Wood and Tristan Langley were almost single-handedly responsible for reeling in the intermediate boys and girls titles for the Cougars, while the Hubtown school also claimed the senior boys crown.
"It's pretty cool," said the 16-year-old Wood, who nabbed gold medals in the 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m events and added a silver in the 4x400m relay. "It's the first time I've gotten a team banner."
Wood said wining a banner was a surprise.
"I wasn't really expecting that," he said.
Langley, a 15-year-old Grade 10 student, claimed gold in each of the same events and said helping her school win a banner was something different for a multi-sport athlete who's no stranger to individual success.
"It's really exciting," she said. "It's different because we did it as a team and when you're with a team it makes you push yourself harder."
Although both were coming off successful district competitions and were confident they could do well at regionals, both were still fighting nerves when lining up for their races.
"I kind of expected (the results) because I knew the competition," Wood said. "But I'm always nervous before running a race."
Langley was in the same boat.
"I hoped I could do well but you never know," she said. "Anything can happen."
But the experience and training for both athletes, who are also teammates on the Central Nova Legion Legends track and field club, helped in calming their nervousness.
"I was really mentally prepared," said Langley, who trains all year round between the Cougars and Legion Legends.
Such strong results have both athletes confident heading into this weekend's provincial championships at Beazley Field in Dartmouth.
But both also know duplicating their performances won't be a cakewalk.
"It's really tough competition and I'm really going to have to push myself," Langley said.
