AMHERST - After a year of intense competition, the Amherst Aerials Gymnastics Club can finally breathe easy.
"I'm very proud of all the kids and how hard they worked all season long," said gymnastics coach Michelle Landry after her club performed well at the Atlantic championships in Sydney. "We have two more fun events we will be attending but no more competitive events.
"So the pressure of the main competitions if off for the rest of the season. It's a fun time of year for them."
The Atlantics were the last competitive event of the season and three Aerials athletes returned home with ribbons and medals.
Kyrsten Landry, who competes in the Open 2 division, was sixth in vault, fifth in beam, and sixth overall.
Jenna Porter finished fourth in vault, sixth in the beam and also earned a team gold in the Open 2 division.
Kyle Johnson was fifth in floor, third on the parallel bars, sixth overall and also won gold in the Level 3 division.
It was the first year for boys to compete at Aerials Gymnastics and Landry said it was a great experience.
"Kyle has fit in just great. He's been a real pleasure to work with," Landry said. "He's really try's to challenge himself and did all we could possibly ask of him."
Johnson will be back next year and said one area he really needs to work on over the summer is his flexibility.
"It would help a lot to be more flexible," he said.
Landry is also very pleased with how far Kyrsten has come along.
"She improved tremendously over the last year. Next year we will try increasing her skill level so she can perform more complex routines."
And Porter continues, year in and year out, to be a stellar performer for the club.
"Jenna likes to have fun out there," Landry said. "She has fun and performs great. What more could we ask."
With another year of competive gymnastics gone by, Landry is looking to the future.
"Next year will only be better," she said.
