AMHERST - The Amherst Regional High School junior varsity Vikings didn't win provincials this past weekend, but they did end on a high note - winning the consolation final in a rout and exceeding all expectations set by coach Bill Murphy.
ARHS hosted the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation junior varsity boys championship this weekend. The home team finished third, and coach Murphy was pleased with the effort.
"We exceeded expectations this year," Murphy said after his team took third place in a 10-1 consolation final victory over Northumberland.
"Finishing third is pretty successful."
The Vikings actually came oh-so-close to a berth in the final, holding off defending provincial champ Horton for much of their match on Friday. Horton broke a 2-2 deadlock mid-way through the second half to win 3-2 and would once again play for the title.
Halifax West won Friday's other game, knocking off Northumberland 7-0 to earn a shot in the final.
So while ARHS was pumping Northumberland on Saturday afternoon, Halifax West and Horton were in a tight battle in the title game. Halifax West took the crown in a 1-0 win.
Murphy said Friday's loss to Horton deflated the team, but they got their spirits up enough Saturday to take something from provincials.
"They wanted to come away with a medal," Murphy said. "They thought third was better than nothing."
Marcel Amirault (two), John Pike (two), Jeff MacIntosh, Pedro Corrona, Matt MacDonald, Kyle Rushton, Nick Wolfe and Greg Gilroy scored for ARHS on Saturday.
During Friday's 3-2 loss to Horton, it was Lucas Hurley and and Matt MacDonald scoring for ARHS.
