AMHERST - It's mission accomplished for Amherst powerlifter Nathan Robertson.
"My goal was to break some records and I did it," said Robertson, who competed in the Battle of Montreal last weekend and won first place in the 110-kilogram class.
"I did a 745-pound squat, a 518-pound bench, and got a 551-pound deadlift," Robertson said. "My total (1,814 pounds) was 10 pounds over my personal record."
Robertson tried to bench press 562 pounds but came up just short.
Robertson, 33, cut weight before the competition and thought that might have hurt his strength.
The overall and bench press totals are records for Robertson's age and weight category in the Canadian Powerlifting Organization.
"My short-term goal is 800 pounds on the squat and 600 for the bench and deadlift," Robertson said.
Robertson will attend the national championships in May in Montreal, where he hopes to qualify for the world championships in Helsinki, Finland.
"Amherst Chiropractic is my sponsor and they treat me very well," Robertson said. "But if I get the chance to go to Helsinki I will definitely need more sponsors."
