The Swift Current Foresters United Soccer Club’s Southwest SoccerFest Tournament had almost always been hampered by the elements, but the 15th edition took it to a whole new level as some of the games on Sunday were cancelled due to safety concerns. The tournament began with sunshine on Friday, shifted to rain on Saturday, and ended in heavy snowfall on Sunday.
The U10 United Red boys won their home tournament in a shootout. They finished with a 1-1-1 record in the round robin with a 2-1 win over Moose Jaw, a 3-2 loss to United White, and a 0-0 tie against Weyburn. They won 2-1 in a shootout to win gold at home in the snow on Sunday morning.
The U10 United White boys finished third in the round robin with a 1-1-1 record. They defeated United Red 3-2, lost to Moose Jaw 5-1, and tied Weyburn 4-4 to miss the playoffs.
The U10 girls division also hosted two Swift Current teams. The United Red team earned a 1-0 win over the Moose Jaw Storm and a 2-0 win over United White to earn a trip to the finals where they suffered a 4-1 loss to Weyburn in the snow.
The United White U10’s lost 3-0 to Weyburn, 2-0 to United Red and tied Moose Jaw 2-2.
The Under-12 girls division featured a pair of Swift Current teams battling it out against one another as well as the Weyburn Lil’ Black Devils.
The United Red team lost 2-0 to the United White team and then defeated Weyburn 3-1 to advance to the final.
United White lost 4-2 to Weyburn in the round robin but rebounded to defeat them 2-1 in the semifinal to set up an all Swift Current final that was rescheduled to be played later in the week.
The United U12 boys placed fifth with a tie and two losses. They tied the Kindersley Storm 2-2 and lost 2-1 to Chelsea and 4-1 to Coaldale.
The Swift Current United U14 Div II girls had a strong weekend as they opted to play in the boys U14 division. They finished with one win and two losses at the feet of their male counterparts. The highlight was a dramatic 1-0 victory over the Weyburn Junior Black Devils on Saturday afternoon. The tightly contested match was scoreless through 68 minutes before rookie Mackenzie Froehlich found the back of the net with only two minutes remaining. Hannah Dyck picked up the shutout for the girls.
The U14 girls likely played their best game of the tournament against the Swift Current United boys on Friday evening. The boys scored a late goal to salvage the 4-3 win after the girls had erased a 3-1 halftime deficit. Santana Gowan scored the girls’ first two goals and Kirstie Klevgaard tied the game in the 52nd minute.
The girls suffered a disappointing 6-2 loss to the Regina Unidad 99’s that evening to finish their tournament. Swift Current got goals from Jade Addai and Santana Gowan and trailed 3-2 early in the second before they had player sent off and were forced to play one player short for the final 30 minutes.
The U14 boys went on to place second in the five-team round robin. They defeated the Unidad 99’s 4-3 on Saturday but lost to the Moose Jaw Storm 3-1 on Sunday morning to settle for silver.
The U14 United Div III girls also hosted the Weyburn Junior Red Devils for a pair of exhibition games and won the two-game, total-goals series 3-1. They tied 1-1 in the opener on a goal from striker Brittney Lamontagne. Swift Current clinched the series in the second game with a 2-0 win on goals from Lamontagne and Sydney Hope as Charlene Burkey earned the shutout.
The U16 United boys had no problem capturing gold on home turf. They earned a 5-0 win over Kindersley Storm FC and followed up with an 8-0 win over the Weyburn Black Devils.
