The Colts soccer team opened the season with a third place finish at home.
The Swift Current Comp. Colts soccer team opened their season by hosting a four-team tournament over the weekend.
The Colts finished with a 1-2 record in a three-way tie for second spot, but placed third overall after the goals for tiebreaking procedure.
They opened the season with a 4-1 loss to a talented Moose Jaw Central Cyclones squad that finished the tournament undefeated. Striker Dylan Griffin notched the lone goal on a terrific 20-yard strike.
Coach Chris Garner noted that the team did well to contain the Cyclones in the second half while creating some offensive chances of their own.
Saturday morning, the Colts jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Weyburn and held on for a 3-2 win. Griffin, Austin Friesen, and Jacob Menun all scored in the win. Sweeper Dillon Friesen controlled the backfield and tempo during the win and also set up two of his team’s three goals.
The Colts got off to a good start against Prince Albert Carlton with an early goal from Joan Torres, who converted a rebound off a Friesen free kick. A delay caused by the underground sprinklers was weathered by the Colts as they led 1-0 at the half. Carlton equalized in the second half and pressured up the middle for the go-ahead goal as the Colts fell 2-1 in a game that saw both teams shown red cards in the dying moments.
“I think that what we have to do is maintain our tempo and maintain the pressure. We always seem to come out really strong, but in the second half we seem to falter,” said Garner.
