The Swift Current Comp. Ardens kicked off their 2011 season with a pair of exhibition wins on Tuesday.
The Ardens overcame some early rust to post a pair of wins, outscoring their opponents 9-0 during a pair of 50-minute exhibition matches in Moose Jaw as they prepare to open their Moose Jaw High School Soccer League regular season on Saturday.
The Ardens opened the afternoon with a 4-0 win over the Estevan Elecs. The Ardens did everything right in the first 14 minutes except for find the back of the net. Grade 12 striker Kaity Letwiniuk finally got the Ardens on the board when she converted a breakaway opportunity. Cassidy Andres, the league’s defending scoring champion, made it 2-0 in the 16th minute when she walked down the goal line and cut back out front for her first goal of the season. Letwiniuk scored a minute later for a 3-0 lead and completed the hat trick late in the first half for a 4-0 final.
Britney Cleaveley and Beriah Klein shared the shutout in goal. Emilie Erlandson had a pair of assists, while Andres and Tara Kirkpatrick also set up goals.
The Ardens overcame an early scare in their second game to defeat the Weyburn Eagles 5-0. The Eagles pressed the Ardens early and only a great kick save from Cleaveley and some help from the goal post kept the game scoreless in the early moments. The Ardens eventually composed themselves and scored the pivotal first goal when Erlandson fired a 15-yard rope into the top corner on a partial breakaway. Erlandson soon made it 2-0 with a rebound goal before Letwiniuk counted for a 3-0 halftime lead. Erlandson completed the hat trick in the second half and Andres added her second of the day when she knocked in a rebound.
Cleaveley and Cassandra Furey-Cameron shared the shutout in goal. Cleaveley, Andres, Kaylee Kyle, Brittany Schafer, and Daelin Bakken all chipped in assists.
The Ardens will be back in Moose Jaw on Saturday to face Weyburn and Estevan to open the regular season. They will make their home debut on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Irwin Field against the Moose Vanier Vikings in a rematch of last year’s championship match.
