OXFORD – Oxford played host to the Division 4 Girls Soccer Championships over the weekend and despite, the team’s efforts, the Oxford Regional High School senior girls lost the bronze-medal game in overtime against the Baddeck Academy Broncos with a final score of 1-0.

“Overall, I think we played a good game. This has been the best game we played throughout the weekend, we stayed strong and tried to beat them. It just didn’t happen,” Golden Bears captain Haylen Bezubiak said.

“I want to take the opportunity to congratulate Oxford on placing fourth in the province,” Darrell Dempster, executive director for the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation said following Saturday’s bronze-medal game.

The overtime goal was scored at the 14-minute mark of overtime by Lara Lunz.

“A number of excellent saves by each goalie were made, forcing the game into overtime,” Oxford’s coach Kendall Black said.

The championship game saw Cape Breton Highlands Academy play against Ecole Du Sommet with Cape Breton Highlands claiming their third consecutive provincial championship. The game ended with a final score of 2-1.

Cape Breton led 2-0 at halftime with Ecole Du sommet scoring with 10 minutes remaining, and also had several good scoring chances in the final seconds of the game.

“It was a very exciting championship game to watch,” Black said.

Goal scorers were Brielle Doucet and Isabel Phillips with one goal each for Cape Breton and the goal for Ecole Du Sommet was scored by Sydney Kenney.
