The Swift Current Comp. Ardens moved one step closer to locking up top spot in the Moose Jaw High School Soccer League with a 4-1 win over the host Moose Jaw Central Cyclones on Wednesday.
The Ardens got three goals from league-leading goal scorer Cassidy Andres and a single from centre halfback Brittany Schafer to move to 5-0-1 in league play. Beriah Klein picked up the win as sweeper Danitra Letwiniuk help lead the Ardens fullbacks to a strong defensive outing.
Andres scored in the seventh minute to give the Ardens an early lead, but the Cyclones responded in the 47th minute off a corner kick to even the score 1-1.
The game remained deadlocked for the next 20 minutes before Andres added goals eight minutes apart and Schafer volleyed in a corner kick in the 81st minute to seal the win. Andres, a grade 10 striker, is running away with the league scoring title with 19 goals in six games. The hat trick also moved her into fourth place in MJHSSL all-time scoring with 34 career goals.
The defending champion Ardens can lock up top spot and a bye into the semi-finals with a win over the Moose Jaw Vanier Spirits when they travel to Moose Jaw on Tuesday. Thursday they will host the Moose Jaw AE Peacock Tornadoes in their regular season finale at 4:15 p.m. at Irwin Field.
