Cobequid girls team puts in strong performance in first-ever game

Cougars get a tie

TRURO - It wasn't quite the result the Cobequid Cougars were looking for in their inaugural game.
But they'll take it.
The Cougars girls hockey team battled to a 3-3 draw with the Northumberland Nighthawks Thursday in front of about 200 fans at Colchester Legion Stadium. It was the first time the school had iced a girls squad.
The Cougars looked to be on track to win their first contest until the Nighthawks scored with 6:25 remaining in the third period.
"I wouldn't say (a tie) is just as good (as a win)," said senior forward Gillian Manley, who scored two goals in the game. "I don't think we want to be the type of team that likes ties, but we're going to get a lot better."
Raelee Rath put the Cougars in the lead at 7:43 of the first period before Northumberland tied it about a minute later.
Manley's two goals at 3:47 and 5:42 of the second period gave the Cougars a 3-1 cushion.
But the Nighthawks stormed back and made it 3-2 at 5:20 before netting the tying goal.
Cobequid tried desperately for a winner in the dying minutes, but could only come as close as hitting a post.
"The worst part was that we had the lead and lost it," Manley said. "If we had more time we could have won it.
"It would have been nice to get the win," she added.
But with so many question marks coming into the game with just one practice under their belts and not knowing the competition, the Cougars feel it's a good start for the program.
"It's a lot better than a loss," Manley said.
But with the first game under their belts the Cougars know what they have to work on to be better.
"There was a bit too much individual play and we need to work on some things position- wise," Munroe said. "But our powerplay worked well and the players we know can play well, played well. We've got the first one out of the way and we know where we have to go."
Munroe said it was a great night for the school and the team.
"It was all really positive."
The Cougars are back in action Nov. 23 when they travel to Westville for another meeting with the Nighthawks.
